“Tonight was a great match for our girls. We played pretty solid from top to bottom,” said Dunlap coach, Pat Gornik. “Deepti played an incredible match tonight. Sophie Johnston played amazingly well tonight – she put a ton of pace on the ball and executed her game plan to near perfection.” Sudhakar got out to an early lead in the first set, 5-1, before closing out the first set at 6-4. The second set was much closer, with Johnston taking an early 2-1 lead. The players traded games before Sudhakar broke and held for a 6-5 advantage. With Sudhakar serving, Johnston was able to break her serve to force a tiebreak for the second set. The tiebreaker was delayed for about twenty minutes due to a light rain storm. When play resumed, the girls again continued their close battle, changing ends at 3-3. Sudhakar got up 6-4 in the tie-breaker but lost momentum and the second set, 6-7(6). In the decisive ten point tie-breaker, and with all members of both teams watching, Dunlap’s Sudhakar was able to wrestle control and momentum away from Johnston. “This was by far the closest match that I’ve gotten to see Deepti play this year, and I’m just so proud of her work to maintain her mental composure and never panic. It’s easy to freak out when playing against someone that seems to have your number on the day, but Deepti kept her cool,” remarked Dunlap’s Pat Gornik.

The Eagles are back in action on Thursday for a JV match against Metamora and then again on Saturday as the Varsity is at the Richwoods Invite (hosted at Richwoods HS [1 singles and doubles] and Dunlap HS [2 singles and doubles]). The Fresh-Soph team travels to Morton for the Mid-Illini conference tournament.
