The Lady Eagles tennis team divided, but couldn’t quite conquer the field on Saturday afternoon at the Lady Eagles Invitational. Dunlap fielded a “Gold” and a “Maroon” squad in the 7 team field that featured solid play throughout the 2 singles, 2 doubles event.

The Moline Maroons finished in first as a team behind solid play from both of their singles entries and their #2 doubles team. All three entries were champions, with their #1 doubles team finishing 4th in their bracket.

“This event has been great for us,” said Dunlap’s coach, Pat Gornik. “In a normal year, it’s nice for our girls to be off the road, especially around homecoming time. This year, it was nice to actually play on a Saturday. My hat is off to my AD, Katie Cazalet on getting Moline to round out our field this year – they were a definite power and brought a great team to town. We’re looking forward to having them back again next year.”

“Our teams did a fantastic job playing today. With having a split squad, we were able to have Emily, our normal #2 singles gal, playing #1 singles and that was a great opportunity for her,” said Gornik. “Emily has put in a ton of work and was able to showcase that today, picking up big wins for sectionals and conference by beating Metamora and Richwoods. Taylor (Disharoon) played phenomenal tennis today – every time I see her in matches, she impresses me in a different way. She was absolutely clobbering the ball today and finishing her shots well. Unfortunately she came up against Moline’s #1 (Monika Birski) who was playing lights-out tennis as well. Birski has a unique girl’s game because of her height – she is able to serve and volley very effectively. That definitely isn’t something you see every day, but man was it fun to watch those two push each other to higher and higher levels!”

In the doubles portion of the event, the doubles team of Mary Meghrian and Shikha Agarwal were able to capture the lone championship for the Eagles, beating Richwoods and Moline on the way to a 3 set showdown with conference foe, Metamora. “Mary and Shikha are still learning how to best play with each other and how to trust each other,” commented Gornik. “Once they get it all figured out, it’ll be even more scary. We’ve got some work to do before conference rolls around. I’m so proud of the way they were able to really gut out a victory here (6-4, 0-6, 12-10). They got down early in the third set breaker, but they didn’t give up. They chipped away at that lead and focused their efforts and were rewarded by picking up the win.”

“Even though we had different squads, our girls were all pulling for each other. We goofed around a bit with the Marron v. Gold team comparisons in practice yesterday and before the match today, but in reality all our girls were pulling in the same direction and cheering for each other. This was a real team victory – to be able to split our teams and still end up second and third in a very competitive field should be a huge confidence boost for our ladies. To say that I’m proud would be a tremendous understatement” Gornik remarked.

The Lady Eagles will be back in action next Saturday, 9/26 as they compete in the Cavalier Invite in La Salle. Dunlap will play Mendota, Princeton and the host team, LaSalle-Peru.
